Abstract

From the demographic evolution in Portugal, the weight of the population aging indicators stands out, hence the importance of the study of quality of life and quality certifications in the area of gerontology and care provided to the elderly, especially the Residential Structures for the Elderly (ERPI). The meaning of this study is to analyze the relationship between existence of quality certification and gains for the health of institutionalized elderly people, which reinforces the maintenance and expansion of the quality program of the Social Security Institute in Portuguese ERPI. Cross-sectional quantitative method, in two ERPIs in the Districts of Porto and Vila Real, only one with ISO 9001 certification. Two questionnaires were applied, one to the technical director for sociodemographic information, the other applied to professionals, this one about the users' quality of life, perceived by employees. The collected data were submitted to statistical analysis for correlation and interaction between variables. The sample consisted of 50 employees, divided into two groups of 25. The non-parametric Chi-square test was used to assess the association between variables. There were no significant differences between the two institutions. However, the analyses resulting from the quantitative responses were contradicted by the qualitative responses, where it was reported which benefits the certification represented in the elderly's quality of life. Limitations to which this study was subject: 1. Covid-19's pandemic situation and the restrictions and conditions imposed on institutions; 2. Sample size compared to the sample size of professionals at the institution, without taking into account age and training time; 3. The respondents' working time, the geosocial location of the institutions and the respective sanitary-clinical situation. This study warns the importance of a global care plan for the elderly, with a view to meeting their basic and felt needs, namely with quality certification to the institution.
