Abstract

The interaction between the Portuguese and the Chinese go back to the 16th century through Macau, and since then, the first images of what China and the chinese were for the portuguese navigators in a foreign land were created. These very first images were brought back to Portugal where, from that moment on, were transformed over time.
Stereotypes, positive or negative ones, are in many ways used to illustrate the “Other” – of what is unknown to the watcher – in an attempt to create an overall image that hardly ever depicts the reality of the country and culture.
With the ever growing chinese investment in Portugal, we intend to analyse a few images that represent China and the chinese in Portugal, in an attempt to see what is the current vision the portuguese have of the asian country. To support the analysis on our images, an inquiry was made to a few portuguese.
