Abstract

Introduction: A substantial amount of pathologies diagnosed in the oral cavity corresponds to odontogenic cysts. They arise from the epithelium of a dental germen before or after the completion of odontogenesis, and they can have inflammatory or developmental origin. Generally they are asymptomatic and the patient only searches for medical help when the lesion is quite developed. It is the dentist´s role to do a systematic and careful analysis of the radiolucent lesions, and make the necessary diagnostic exams to achieve a correct diagnosis. Objective: To determine the frequency of odontogenic cysts in the Clinical University of Portuguese Catholic University, and to determine it´s the distribution according to age, gender and site affected. The results were compared with previous studies. Material and methods: A retrospective observacional study of the odontogenic cysts diagnosed and treated in the Clinical University since it´s open (May of 2002) until April of 2012 was carried. Results: A diagnosis of odontogenic cysts was established in 4 cases and they represent 8% of all pathological specimens accessioned. Three of the cysts were inflammatory – all were radicular cysts - and one was developmental – lateral periodontal cyst. They were on equal number in the maxilla and mandible and the anatomic region most commonly affected (50%) was the anterior maxillar region. There was a female predominance (75%). The majority of the cases occurred in the third decade of life (50%) and the mean age was 35 years old. Conclusion: The reduced number of cases resulted in differences comparatively to the previous studies. The awareness of the local population and the other medical specialties to the cystic lesions that can be presented on the oral cavity could raise the number of cases. Key words: odontogenic cysts, prevalence, clinical and radiographic characteristics, treatment plan, review of the literature.
