According to UN, in 2045 the urban world-wide population will exceed 6 thousand million inhabitants, and it therefore foresees an unprecedented growth rate of the urban population. This rapid transition into a highly urbanized population causes a number of challenges in several areas such as: education, health, environment, energy, public service, etc. The growing urbanization turned cities into complex social ecosystems where it is imperative to ensure sustainable development. It is in this context that technology arises as a crucial element, enabling the improvement in the management of cities, resulting in the concept of smart city. The main goal of this study is to look into the latest developments of the city of Oporto as an intelligent city, more specifically, what is being done by the Oporto town hall. A qualitative and descriptive type approach has been used, based only on the public sector’s perspective. This study intends to serve as a reflection towards the city management as well as to demonstrate that the development of a city into an intelligent city may be the key to the achievement of sustainable development.
