Abstract
Football has an important role in portuguese society. Thus, we the need to know moreabout sports commentary programs and their individualities.
The main goal of this study is to outline the profile of sports commentators and to
understand the transformations introduced in the format between 1995 e 2016.
In this time period, the generations of sports commentators in the generalist channels
and in their cable channels were analyzed in an attempt to understand who these
individuals are and what their role is in the definition of the sports agenda and in the
construction of a lucid and solid public opinion.
We also seek to understand the influence of the clubs in these programs, connecting
them with the commentators, as well as to perceive the latest trends in the format and to
draw a possible picture for the future of the sport commentary.
Throughout this analysis, there was an increase in the number of programs and several
experiences with the format, as well as a diversification in the profile of the resident
commentators. The results also indicate that the sports commentary was always
dominated by men, who circulate among the various programs, in the different
television channels, especially after the entry of the format in the analyzed cable
channels, in which the sport commentary became an anchor.
This study also allowed us to identify new trends that reveal the impact of digital culture
on the media landscape. In this way, communication directors and club presidents have
become able to interfere in the programs of sports commentary through comments in
social networks as we can see in several examples analyzed later.
