Como se faz uma geração Laudato si’?

Abstract

Bearing in mind Pope Francis´ Encyclical Laudato si’ and its concept of integral ecology, this final report reflects on the challenge of sowing the seeds of Laudato si’ Generation in the school environment. The reflection stems from the teaching and critical analysis of the fourth unit of the 8th grade curriculum— «Ecology and Values» from the Catholic Moral and Religious Education Program, conducted as part of the Supervised Teaching Practice at Santo António Basic School, part of the Parede School Group, during the 2019/2020 academic year in the municipality of Cascais. As a guiding principle, it is proposed that the school becomes a habitat where we can see ourselves as relational beings, interconnected by the idea of belonging to a «common home», oriented toward the good of each and all, with a focus on sustainable development and openness to a shared future. The curricular unit of Catholic Moral and Religious Education, of optional choice, but integrated into the foundation of the Portuguese curricular teaching system, can serve as a doorway to the construction of a more humane, collaborative and caring society, while also preserving humanity’s capacity to marvel at itself, others and nature to which it belongs. Therefore, in response to this challenge and aligning with Unesco´s assertion that «school transforms lives», I presented a pedagogical proposal to be implemented in schools. This proposal seeks to foster the transformation of both sensibilities and knowledge towards the establishment of an «ethic of the Earth». This ethic emphasizes the undeniable interdependence of all living beings, asserting both the value of life and the need for sustainable development of the human person within the broader context of the world.
