Abstract

Introduction: Family Doctors are in a privileged position to provide palliative care in the community they serve. There is no evidence about which competencies Family Doctors in Portugal should have to provide such care. The purpose of this review is to identify Family Doctors competencies in Palliative Care, in the dominions of palliative care principles, psychosocial and spiritual care, communication, teamwork and self- knowledge. Methods: This scoping review was conducted according to JBI methodology. Research was conducted through international databases MEDLINE/PUBMED e CINAHL Complete (by EBSCO) using the terms physicians, general practitioners, family physicians, primary care physicians, competencies, skills, clinical competences, professional competence, palliative care, terminal care, end-of-life care, generalist palliative care, palliative care approach, advance care planning in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish languages, with no time limit, and with a clear description, or with a description through which competencies could be inferred. Gray literature research was also conducted, using the term “palliative care competencies”. Results: After duplicate removal 4755 articles where obtained, 11 of which were selected. 437 competencies in Palliative care for Family Doctors were listed in the dominions of palliative care principles (n=67), psychosocial and spiritual care (n=101), communication (n=129), teamwork (n=93) and self-knowledge (n=47).
