This report is a document that illustrates how my competencies had grown in a specialized kind of knowledge. It was composed of two modules: module I took place in the Emergency Department of Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição Valongo in theperiod of 04/10/2010 to 27/11/2010 and module II took place at Intermediate Care Unitof Medicine of Centro Hospitalar Vila Nova Gaia / Espinho, EPE, in the period from 29/11/2010 to 29/01/2011.The Specialist Nurses, whatever their field of expertise, share a number ofcompetencies that are designated by common competencies. They are grouped as:professional responsibility, ethical and legal, quality management, care management anddevelopment of knowledge. For better understanding and visibility I’ve written thisreport based on the common competencies of the Specialist Nurses. As guidelines forthe developed activities I’ve created objectives, found problem situations, gavesolutions, in a reflective way based on bibliographic support. The quality and care management are two areas that complement each other.Improving the quality of care using available resources and methodologies is always theaim. For that, I made a cost-benefit study of single use kits. Hospital infection is aserious problem in the context of care quality. For me it was an intervention priority soduring my internship I’ve taught two training courses on the theme. The decision totransport a critical patient should always consider the potential benefits and risks. I’vemade the critical patient transport regulation using international guidelines and onetraining courses on the theme. The sharing of experience and support from nursing staff, as well as guidancehave been central to the gathering of knowledge and competence development of aSpecialist Nurse. Therefore, the internship was as a dynamic and enriching experiencethat promoted autonomy and development of specialized care that I provide to thepatient.
