Abstract

As part of conclusion the 15th Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for the Person in Critical Situation, of the Institute of Health Sciences in Universidade Católica Portuguesa, appears these report that is entitled “Specialized Nursing Skills…The construction of a path.” This aims to be a summary of the entire personal path of development of professional skills, where in a critical-reflective way is analyzed the development to achieve excellence in providing care to the critically ill patients. It is transformed into a look at all skills-enhancing activities, from the previous experience to the entire internship path, which was developed in a multipurpose intensive care unit and in a medical surgical emergency service, integrating with all the knowledge acquired in the curricular part of the master's degree. This report is developed from the introduction to the previous journey of building skills, resulting from more than ten years of professional experience, in the care of critically ill patients; hereafter is the characterization and contextualization of the internship locations as they were potential enhancers for the acquisition of all skills and it is not possible to trace the path without referring to their specificities. Subsequently, the path for the development of specialized skills is explained in accordance with the domains of competence of the specialist nurse, which are, namely, the domains - of professional, ethical and legal responsibility, of continuous quality improvement, of care management and of the development of professional learning, thus starting from the general to the particular of the area of specialization in question, based on the personal objectives outlined, but also those inherent to the specialization and master's degree itself, and in the conclusion is made the balance of the entire path, highlighting difficulties, contributions and implications of the study cycle in professional activity. As a contribution to the internship location, two works were developed, one aimed to standardizing the clinic practice and the other a literature review about the use of simulated practice, in the acquisition of skills, in the emergency service, showing the advantages and disadvantages of its use. The process of acquiring skills has become challenging due to the development of the restlessness, the need to question and investigate to provide the person with the best care, the excellence resulting from specialized practice.
