Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate the relationship between online risk behaviors because of the presence of dependence on substances, namely alcohol and drugs, in order to also understand the impact of social support and impulsivity in young adults. It is also intended to study these variables according to sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, age and schooling. Thus, to collect the data, a sociodemographic questionnaire constructed for this purpose. To assess online risk behaviors, an adaptation of the Online Risk Behavior Scale (ECRO) was made. Espad will also be used to estimate the pattern of substance consumption of the participants. To evaluate social support, the Social Support Satisfaction Scale, built by Ribeiro and, finally, to measure impulsivity, the Impulsivity Scale (SUPSSP) will be used. The study sample consists of 212 young Portuguese adults, aged between 18 and 30 years (M = 24.15, SD = 3.32), mostly female (58%), of Portuguese nationality (91, 0%), single (90.6%), from various regions of the country, in order to understand patterns of online risk behavior, due to substance abuse, lack of social support and psychological factors such as impulsivity. The present study suggests statistically significant relationships and models between online risk behaviors, substance use, impulsivity and social support. Regarding substance use and risky behavior online, it is also possible to understand that it is the male gender that presents the most addictive behaviors. However, it is women who present more impulsive behaviors and, even, a lower perception of social support. In view of these results, it is important to develop more studies that correlate these constructions with different situations, due to the relevance of raising awareness among the younger population about the potential risks of addictions.
