Abstract

Purpose: Sports Dentistry is an area responsible for the prevention and treatment of oro-facial injuries in athletes. This study aims to analyze the behaviors of oral health and dietary habits associated with physical activity in sport professionals (PPD) and students of Master’s degree in Dental Medicine (MIMD). Materials and methods: a cross-sectional epidemiological observational study sample consisted of 225 elements. . It was administered a questionnaire with closed and direct questions that integrated Orthodontic Aesthetic Subjective Impact Scale (OASIS) Brazilian validated version, International and Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Version (IPAQ), validated in Portugal. It was evaluated the decayed, missing and filled teeth Index (DMFT), the Periodontal Community Index and anthropometric measurements (weight, height and body mass index). Data were analyzed using the calculation of mean and standard deviation (SD), absolute and relative frequencies, Student's t test and the chi-square (α = 0,05). Results: It was noted that the average of decayed and missing teeth is higher in PPD (1.8 and 0.6) than MIMD students (1.0 and 0.6) and the average gingival recession is higher in MIMD students (3.0) than in PPD (2.4). 96.6% of students of MIMD and 91.2% PPD consider that the oral / dental problems have influence in sport performance but only 48.9% of students of MIMD and 44.5% PPD consider the presence of dentist as important in the sporting community. Conclusion: Despite the recognition of the influence of oral problems in sports performance, information on prevention of oro-facial trauma is limited among professionals and sports groups. MIMD students have better oral health habits, however the PPD have healthier eating habits.
