Abstract

This report aims to critically describe the process of acquisition and development of common and specific skills of the specialist nurse and the development of the Master competences, acquired during the Master Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing Care to Person and Family in Critical Situation, of the Portuguese Catholic University of Lisbon. This process took place during the course and included theoretical and practical learning in the curricular units “Surveillance and Clinical Decision” and “Final Internship and Report”. In both units, competency development objectives were established, in accordance with their Guiding Guide, Regulation of Specific Skills of the Nurse Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the Nursing Care to Person and Family in Critical Situation and Regulation of Common Skills of the Specialized Nurse. The first stage of the “Clinical Surveillance and Decision” unit was held in a Lisbon General Urgency Department, where skills in the field of knowledge and care for people in urgent and emerging critical situations were mostly developed. The final stage was developed in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit, in a Lisbon Hospital, where I was able to develop the care to the critical person and family in intensive care.In both units, I developed a project methodology using evidence-based practice through caring, development of critical thinking and research, which resulted in reflections in accordance with the Gibbs Cycle, participation in congresses and team education. An integrative literature review on Communication with the Person and Family in Critical Situation was performed, as nursing intervention and competence of the specialist nurse.
