The main aim of this study is to understand how the commercial managers, of the Port wine sector, cope with possible conflicts in their professional and family life. We will also want to understand the human resource management practices of the company, in response to the specificity of work and family context, and the perception of managers about these practices. We used the qualitative method inquiry, with resource to semi structured interviews. The sample includes 12 participants from the company under analysis: 10 managers from the commercial area and 2 from senior management. The main results suggest that, despite of the difficulties experienced in balancing the two dimensions, multiple strategies are being used to try to reach balance. Moreover, the way human resource management practices are structured, helps workers experience higher levels of comfort and well-being. This may help minimize the conflicts that arise from work, affecting the family and vice versa. For further investigation, we recommend the assessment and presentation of possible suggestions to improve the quality of life at home and at work of these commercial managers.
