The social and political speeches seem to encourage, more than before, the creation of selfemployment, against the odds of an unstable labor market. With the increase in selfemployment situations, it became relevant to understand the factors determining the choice of a self-employed activity and the impact of employment situations in the health of workers. For this purpose, we performed a qualitative study based on interviews and survey of work and health [INSAT] (2010) and requested the collaboration of two participants who came from a situation of wage employment in the same company, and currently are self-employed. It also held an interview with the Director of Human Resources of the company where both participants worked. The data analysis allowed us to perceive that options underlying the decision to self-employment are linked to the expectation of creating a better life, not so much financially, but the autonomy and the ability to not only manage the entire business as working hours. However, this job also entails non-negligible costs to health associated with increased responsibilities and delivering a "no limits" to the business, which are not always equated reflection on opportunities / constraints of this job.
