Abstract

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may offer new possibilities in the treatment of emotional problems in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). The objective of this study is to develop a program based on ACT and analyze it, from the point of view of acceptability, in people with ABI undergoing neuropsychological rehabilitation. The program consists of 6 weekly 90-minute sessions and focuses on accepting what is beyond personal control, committing to encouraging behaviors that improve quality of life, managing anxiety, planning goals, distancing yourself from painful thoughts and in establishing group competencies. The current study has ten participants (6 men) with ABI, with an average time since injury of 4,100 years (SD = 1,663), an average age of 43,800 (SD = 10,497), an average depression score of 6,375 (SD = 2.387) and an average anxiety score of 7.500 (SD = 4.426) according to the HADS. Acceptability analysis is carried out in two moments, one at the end of each session and the other one at the end of the program. At the end of each session, with the application of the Session Evaluation Questionnaire (SEQ; Stiles, 1980) and an open question to the participants. At the end of the program, the Qualitative Program Assessment Questionnaire (QAQP) based on the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA; Sekhon, Cartwright, Francis, 2017) is applied. The results indicated that the program has the potential to achieve its proposed objectives and that it has attributes that make clients feel supported during their neuropsychological rehabilitation.
