Most European countries will assess their schools in order to improve the quality of compulsory education. This assessment stems from some trends that mark the majority of European countries, such as the decentralization of resources and setting national goals and levels of attainment. Recognizing the importance of internal evaluation in the school context, this research work, carried out in two secondary schools in the south bank of the Tagus, known throughout the investigation by schools A and B, analyzed the internal assessment process conducted in each. The focus of that relates to the construction, selection and use of indicators. In this context, with the aim of analyzing the evaluation process, we interviewed the principals of the schools mentioned above and to analyze the product of that assessment, we studied the reports of most recent internal review. In school A, the entire evaluation process was carried out by a team of five faculty members appointed by the Director. In school B, the indicators have been proposed by an outside company and were selected by a team of teachers, students, parents, assistants and members of the local authority, after hearing the intermediate structures of the school. Data analysis was performed by the external company. The team developed and released the report. In both schools was chosen benchmark CAF (Common Assessment Framework). A frame with a dual structure where four criteria are considered means and five results. In addition to analyzing the indicators of each of the nine criteria of this reference, were also studied indicators selected by each school against the benchmark of IGE (General Inspection of Education) as well as against the benchmark CIPP (a reference defended by many authors linked to Education, which includes the context, inputs, processes and product evaluation). The dissertation aimed to also examine the use and impact assessment in each of the schools. Although, both have widespread results in a school and the process was shared more than the other, it was not possible to verify that changes have been implemented, both at organizational or educational level, following the completion of the whole process of internal evaluation.
