The present work corresponds to a dissertation presented to the Catholic University of Portugal, Faculty of Education and Psychology to obtain the degree of Master in Educational Sciences – specialization in Social Pedagogy and is entitled "Building social capital through participatory music making: A case study of a community orchestra”. The study aimed to understand what the perceived benefits of participation in participatory music making in a community orchestra are, as experienced by the participants, and to what extent social capital was generated based on the 5 proximity indicators identified by Robert Putnam. The overarching objective was to investigate the extent to which the social capital generated contributed to the perceived benefits and the general sense of well-being of the participants. In empirical terms, an ethnographic case study was developed, framed by a qualitative approach, with the aim of identifying the benefits and indicators of social capital through observations and interviews with the participants. The analysis of the results of the study point to a considerable wealth of social capital generated in the community orchestra which has contributed significantly to the perceived benefits of participation and the general sense of well-being of the participants.
