The realization of this report fits into the study plan of the Masters Course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing of the academic year 2009/2011 of the Institute of Health Sciences of Portuguese Catholic University, being the main purpose to underline the competences developed. The experiments described relate to the internships performed in the Intensive Care Unit and the Infection Control Committee of the Local Health Unit of Matosinhos and the internship performed at the Emergency Service of the Hospital São João, by the time period between April 19 of 2009 and January 29 of 2011, in an overall of 750 hours. In order to meet its purpose this report is structured sequentially, using a methodology based on descriptive and analytical reflection on lived experiences, seeking to capture the experiences that better describe the skills developed. For that is privileged the description of the strategies that I developed for promoting a safe environment, not only for patient safety, but also to all professionals, as well as the report of the experiences that demonstrate an autonomous nursing with emphasis on the development of capacity for diagnosis and nursing interventions. Similarly, visibility is given to the development of technical skills that caring for the critically ill patient demands. Throughout the different descriptions are privileged informal discussions carried out with the various professionals in the places of traineeship, in whom I emphasized aspects of professional level domain as communication with patients and families, evidence-based practice and prevention and control of infection. The competencies developed allowed an adjustment of behaviours and in the future a greater openness to new initiatives, thereby promoting the evolution for the provision of care more secure and of higher quality.
