Abstract

This document comes under the X Nursing Master’s Degree Specialization in the area of Medical-Surgical Nursing developed in the Institute of Health Sciences of the Portuguese Catholic University. The report aims to critically and reflexively analyze the activities preformed during each internship and the skills developed along this process of study. The consolidation and systematization of the theoretical content practically applied allow a reflexive practice based on scientific evidence that enables the development of critical thinking concerning action taken in nursing. This continuous process of study promotes quality nursing care. The locations of internship were selected with the objective of allowing the development of technical, scientific, ethical, deontological, and relational skills in the context of providing adequate nursing care to a person in critical condition and their family. This learning path demonstrated in the report is centered around three internships, one of which is Hospital Infection Control and Prevention, which has been credited due to the professional experience in the area, where the skills were further reinforced. This theme is transversal in all internships, focused mainly in training healthcare professionals. The other internships were respectively in the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department, where this report highlights the features of each for the continuous learning process of specialized nursing. The opportunity to carry out these two internships in the same institution where I work allowed for the development of a training plan related to the procedure blood culture collection with the aim being to diminish the rate of contaminated blood cultures. Considering that this rate is an indicator of quality of nursing care, it is necessary to reflect and improve on these practices.
