Abstract

This work results from the Supervised Teaching Practice in the subject of Religious Education and from the reflection carried out from the fourth teaching unit of the 5th grade: «Building fraternity». For the theological and pedagogical deepening of the guiding theme of the Report "The Contribution of Salesian Pedagogy and Service Learning in the construction of fraternity", following the philological method, we made an analysis of the meaning and etymology in the Hebrew and Greek languages of the term "service". The second aspect of the reflection focuses on the theme of fraternity as service in the texts of the New Testament. We chose two evangelical texts: the Parable of the Two Sons (Lk 15, 11ff) and the Foot Washing narrative (Jn 13, 1-15). Then we reflected on the contribution of Salesian Pedagogy and Service Learning in building fraternity. Salesian Pedagogy presupposes a Christian anthropological vision of education, in order to humanize culture, lead young people to meet Christ and create a more fraternal human society. The Service Learning, as an educational proposal, unites the learning processes and the community service in a single project, provides educational conditions that promote the development of personal skills and active participation in society. It allows a qualified community service, enables a new learning perspective and gives a new meaning to citizenship education. In the Encyclical Letter Fratelli Tutti, on Fraternity and Social Friendship, by Pope Francis, in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10, 25-37), we find the way for a theological reflection on the theme of the teaching unity: "Building fraternity". The Good Samaritan's behaviour is a challenge to step outside of oneself and pay attention to the other; it invites to openness, acceptance and to put oneself in the other's shoes in an empathic way. Finally, we present a planning proposal based on the Good Samaritan pericope, with the aim of helping to reflect and deepen the concepts of care, service, proximity and fraternity.
