Abstract

The existing literature about the experience of pregnancy in men is scarce, so in this work we intend to contribute to understanding the experience of pregnancy in males, particularly the experience of symptoms of couvade of Portuguese men. The symptoms of couvade are characterized by a set of psychological and physical symptoms experienced by men during pregnancy. In this paper, we integrate two sub-studies. In sub-study I conducted semi-structured interviews to four "pregnant men" Portuguese, in order to know their perceptions about the experience of pregnancy, specifically the experience of symptoms of couvade. In substudy II analyzed the experience of symptoms of couvade from a group of eighty-one "pregnant men" and run the Portuguese pilot study of adaptation and validation of the Men `s Health Partners During Pregnancy Questionnaire (Brennan, Ayers, Ahmed & Marshall - Lucette, 2007). The data obtained point to the experience of symptoms of couvade on the part of Portuguese men and support the need for continued study of the Couvade in our country
