Companies make up a significant slice of the world and Portuguese economy, and as a management student, the fascination arises in studying them and helping to develop support material so that future managers and other readers can learn and apply the contents. The research work focused on cultural controls (Merchant and Van der Stede, 2007; Malmi & Brown, 2008; Hofstede et al, 1990) used in companies as management tools that intend to influence the behavior of employees. Considering the theoretical framework, this master's thesis aimed at the empirical case study of the application of cultural controls at IKEA, more specifically at the Braga unit. In this way, we are faced with the methodology: case study. This allowed a comparison to be made between the company's practices and the literature review, regarding the main characteristics of the applied cultural controls, and, also, in the way in which they influence the behavior of employees. This comparison was facilitated by reading the case study concerning IKEA Bäckebol, written by students at the University of Gothenburg in 2010. Concluding, the analysis carried out aims to reinforce the role that cultural controls can play in the way in which employees are interconnected towards the fulfillment of the established objectives. IKEA maintains its values since its inception, in a well-defined way, making it present a strong organizational culture that governs the daily activity of employees, highlighting the relevance of cultural controls as one of the most relevant types of control.
