Abstract

The purpose of this report, framed within the Master's Degree in Nursing with specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of nursing care for critically ill individuals, was to demonstrate the acquisition of skills for providing specialized care in Medical-Surgical Nursing at a master's level. Temperature control is a neuroprotective measure and has been a controversial topic regarding hypothermia. There are studies that demonstrate its benefit, while others argue that hypothermia is detrimental to multiorgan failure in individuals with traumatic brain injury. Therefore, I chose to conduct a scoping review entitled "The Benefits of Temperature Control in Critically Ill Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury" to highlight the importance of temperature control for critically ill individuals with traumatic brain injury. This work serves as a subsidiary to the development of master's level competencies. The provision of nursing care in terms of neuroprotection is based on Rozzano Locsin's nursing theory "Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing," which supports my clinical practice. In order to develop skills and abilities in specialized care for critically ill individuals and to achieve the proposed objectives, I chose to undertake internships in an extrahospital setting and in an intensive care unit. This report is structured according to the master's and specialist competencies outlined in the curriculum of the Master's Degree in Nursing at the Catholic University. Throughout the report, I will provide contextualization of the internship sites and reflect on the learning process, as well as the specialized skills in Medical-Surgical Nursing that I developed, using reflective practice to discuss the main activities performed. In conclusion, this report aims to elucidate the educational path I undertook in different contexts of acquiring and developing skills in specialized nursing care for critically ill individuals.
