Abstract

This research assignment aims to claim for a University for the Elderly in Nespereira, prompted by the Social Centre in Nespereira. In order to endeavor measures of response to this request, a literature review of issues associated with the Universities for the Elderly was previously carried out. This assignment is divided into two chapters: the first chapter is about the theoretical framework and the second chapter presents the research methodology. In other words, the first chapter discusses the aging process, the theme of lifelong learning and characterizes the Universities for the Elderly, in order to reflect on the relevance that these have on the aging process. The second chapter contains the methodological aspects adopted in this assignment, the research-action methodology was chosen to achieve the objectives as this aims to trigger social change. In this sense, a semi-structured interview was conducted to six participants in the Social Support (as part of the Social Centre Nespereira). Another semi-structured interview was conducted to the Rectors of the three Universities for the Elderly and a focus-group to the respective students. The amount of information gathered through the literature review, from visits to the Universities for the Elderly along with listening to what the participants of the Social Support expect to do, endeavor procedures allowed for the creation of the University for the Elderly in Nespereira, as well as provide guidelines for creation of other universities. Thus, the assignment ends with the conclusion in which certain procedures enabled the establishment of the designated Senior Academy of Nespereira, as well as its features. In other words, the Senior Academy of Nespereira is a nonprofitable organization, with non-formal education, it has a voluntary scheme offering a range of eleven subjects and is directed to the senior population.
