Abstract

This document was drafted as a part of the evaluation for Unidade Curricular Estágio Final e Relatório of the Master's degree in Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing speciality: Person in Critical Situation, conducted by Instituto de Ciências da Saúde of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in order to to award the academic Master degree and professional title of Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing. This Internship report comprises the description and reflective analysis of the specialized skills development process of the person in critical condition and his/her family. As such, a well-defined path was created to cover the development of common and specific activities and skills throughout the three different internship stages. However, with the worsening of the pandemic, there was the need to reformulate this pathway and its objectives. The transversal objective throughout the different stages of the internship was kept and is related to the phenomenon of interest "Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation - psychological impact of ECMO on long-term survivors", chosen not only due to various personal assumptions, but also, with the increasing use of ECMO, the concern about the impact of this technique may have on a person in the long-term has begun to emerge. In this document, you can also find: the main reasons that led to the choice of the new internship contexts and their specific objectives; the critical reflective process of competence development, guided by Afaf Meleis' Transitions Theory and Jean Watson's Theory of Human Care; as well as the main difficulties experienced, and the strategies used to overcome them. Several activities were also developed, including: a Mixed Methods Systematic Review of Literature and the presentation of a Poster about the phenomenon of interest; the implementation of measures related to infection’s prevention and control; and the creation of a table containing the main photosensitive drugs used in operating rooms was made.
