Abstract

This Report comes within the scope of the Internship and Report curricular unit, inserted in the 15th Master's Course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing, at Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Instituto Ciências da Saúde. The objective is to describe the route for acquisition and development of Competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing, through a descriptive and critical-reflective methodology on the activities developed. In the pre-hospital context, VMER Service, the development of skills around pre hospital care involved providing care to people in critical condition, such as: participation in medical emergencies, and patients transport, growth of communication skills with the patient and family and in the safety of the patient and health professionals. It was possible to contribute to the improvement of the quality of care provided, in the “comfort of the family through the intervention of the nurse in the transmission of bad news in the context of Urgency and Emergency.” In the context of the Program for the prevention and control of infection and resistance to microbials, skills were developed in terms of prevention and control of infection as an integral part of the commission for control of infections and resistance to antimicrobials, carrying out audits in this area. The carrying out of a Scoping Review - “Measures for the prevention and control of cross-infection by MRSA in a hospital context” revealed the scientific evidence in this area. Once the course has been completed, it is considered that specialist nurse skills have been developed and it is believed to be capable of providing specialized care in the area of Medical Surgical Nursing in the future, through decision-making processes, based on reflected action and practice based on scientific evidence, leading to personal and professional growth in the areas of common skills of specialist nurses, but mainly in the area of infection prevention and control.
