Abstract

This report was developed within the scope of the Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing in Critical Care, with the purpose of illustrating, in a critical and reflective way, the activities developed and the skills acquired during the internships. The internships are part of the curricular unit "Final Internship and Report", since I obtained equivalence to the curricular unit "The Critically ill Person and Family - Surveillance and Clinical Decision". The curricular unit "Final Internship and Report" was developed in four internship sites, focusing on intensive care, emergency and my area of preference, cardiology. The first internship was carried out in a palliative care unit for advanced heart failure, the second internship in a medical-surgical intensive care unit, the third in an emergency operating room, and finally the fourth internship in a cardiothoracic surgery block. In the first and last internship a participative observation was carried out, and a critical reflective analysis of the context was performed. Transversal to the second and third internships is the formulation of general and specific objectives that guided them and serve as a backdrop for reflection on the acquisition of competencies process. In parallel with the course unit and with an impact on it, a scoping review was developed, in partnership with two colleagues from the Master's degree, on "Nursing care to critically ill patients with intra-aortic balloon". This theme emerged as a reflection of my experiences as a nurse in cardiology, and also had a special impact on the fourth internship, where we disseminated the results. Still in this sense, and based on my growing taste for research, again in partnership with my master's degree colleagues, I conducted a concept analysis on "Listening in nursing care" in the light of Rodgers' evolutionary concept. Both research papers are present in the report, and the scoping review is in the first chapter of the report. Therefore, I hope that this report demonstrates the path taken in the development of skills acquisition as a specialist nurse in medical-surgical nursing in the area of the critically ill person.
