This report describes and analyzes the path of learning and developing specialized skills within the scope of the Master's Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for the person in critical situation, of the Institute of Health Sciences, of the Catholic University of Lisbon The analysis of the activities is based on reflection on and on the actions performed in professional practice, during the clinical internship in the context of a medical surgical emergency at a ULS in Central Portugal, allowing the development of critical-reflective thinking. As it is an area of greater personal and professional interest, I focus my work on hemodialysis patients and their families in the context of emergencies. This report also includes the theoretical conceptualization of the most varied contexts of clinical praxis supported by Dreyfus' model of competence acquisition, adapted for nursing practice by Benner (2001). It was concluded that nursing interventions to promote the safety and comfort of hemodialysis patients include care for vascular access and maintenance of access for dialysis, care with CLD, care with nutrition and water restriction, psychosocial care, establishment empathic relationship and assertive communication, prevention of nausea, vomiting, action on pain, prevention of constipation and effective action on the four general levels of patient comfort: physical, environmental, psycho spiritual and social. Thus, the patient's comfort and safety should be seen as the focus of nursing intervention to satisfy human needs.
