The present work is part of the professional path of the 13th Master’s and Specialization Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing: Person in Critical Condition, developed by Instituto de Ciências da Saúde of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. For a quality approach of the patient in critical condition, the specialist nurse must develop scientific, ethical, relational and technical competences, as a way to operationalize all the areas of care, such as direct care, management, training and investigation. The first part of this report is formed by a scoping review about a pertinent topic, intending to gather all the knowledge about it. In the second part of the report, I describe the path of development and acquisition of common competences to all the specialist nurses, and specific competences of the specialist nurse in Medical Surgical Nursing: Person in Critical Condition. These practical competences were developed during the two internships carried out during this path: the first internship was developed in an Accident & Emergency Department; the second, in an Intensive Care Unit. In this second chapter I describe, reflecting, the performed activities and the specialized competences achieved, which allowed me to care for the patient in an urgent and/or emergent situation, anticipating the instability and risk of hemodynamic failure, managing pain, managing the patient’s well-being, the administration of therapeutic protocols and the interpersonal communication with the patient and its family. The general objectives defined by me intended for me to develop general competences of a specialist nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing: Person in Critical Condition. On the other hand, the specific objectives defined by me, intended to identify care needs, and answer them, contributing for the improvement of the quality of nursing care. In the first internship, in the Accident & Emergency Department, I identified a need related to the use of capnography in critically ill patients. In the second internship, in the Intensive Care Unit, a need related to the use of targeted temperature management was identified. In this case, the conclusions of the scoping review developed were adapted into a poster, presented and fixed on the ward. This Masters with Expertise Degree, as well as the critical reflexive analysis performed to the competences achieved, were very important to my professional development, contributing for my personal, but mostly professional, growth, leading to an improvement of the quality of nursing care provided by me to the patients in critical condition and their families.
