This Internship Report illustrates the work done within the Curricular Unit "Stage" of the Master's Programme in Nursing, specializing in Medical-Surgical Nursing, by the Catholic University of Portugal (Porto), drawn up in order to reflect on a professional practice and on the actions taken, describing the outlined objectives and relevant activities, inherent in the development and the acquisition of differentiated skills at the level of care, management, research and training, care for excellence, that is, to highlight the way developed during the 3 Modules of Training, particularly in the ER, in the Coordination Group for Prevention and Infection Control and Antimicrobial Resistance and the Intensive Care Unit at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. The methodology used is descriptive / reflective. As far as the field of research is concerned, it proceeded to update protocols for decontamination and care of devices, in order to conserve its functionality and to minimize the risk of contamination; reflected on the procedures related to the prevention of pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation and created a clinical audit tool, especially in order to guide health professionals, promoting the acquisition of skills in relation to: the reflective practice; exposure feasible solutions based on scientific evidence, to the problems detected in the services; the prevention and control of infection; to ensure the quality of care in the area of Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, among others. Regarding the field of management and training, audits were conducted in order to prevent and control infections associated with health care and to identify situations for improvement, intervention and training target by promoting the updating of knowledge and the incorporation of results in practice. In the field of health care service, an effective working methodology was used in a timely manner regarding patient critical care; addressing complex issues systematically and creatively related to the patient and family; a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family is used, among others. Throughout the different modules of the training course, my area of interest and activities were privileged, in agreement with the Head Nurses in the services and Nurse Tutors, as well as considered to be an asset of value to the service, in the case of activities that would be followed up and that the suggestions provided and allusive to the same would be integrated into daily practice. In this context, I believe that the training was beneficial both directly and indirectly, to the extent that my contribution was left in the different services, given that the teams always showed interest and were receptive with regard to my thoughts and suggestions to change attitudes to improve the delivery of Nursing Care, with regard especially to safety, prevention and control of infection, since this area proves to be an important indicator of quality of care and also contributes to reduce additional costs associated with antibiotic therapy, treatments and prolonged hospitalization.
