Abstract

The objective of this placement report is to describe and analyse the learning journey in order to acquire and/or develop competencies related with the Speciality in Medico-Surgical nursing. This journey took place in two different contexts: Module I Emergency Department between 22nd of April 2013 and 22nd July 2013, when core competencies were developed in the field of the specialised nurse, nursing the critical patient, taking into account that health and well-being are influenced by the nurses actions. During this placement, I aimed to facilitate to the client and his family nursing care centred on dignity, to promote comfort, in all its dimensions. Module III Palliative Care, took place in the Unidade de Apoio Domiciliario of Instituto Portugues de Oncolologia de Lisboa Franscisco Gentil, EPE (Community care of the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Lisbon Franscisco Gentil, EPE), between 24th of September 2013 and 15th of November 2013, when I developed competencies which focused on communication, therapeutical relationship based on the needs of the patient and his family towards the end of life, with the objective to promote comfort using techniques based on dignity. Common to both modules was the attention to continuous personal and professional development of colleagues, seeing as local teaching constitutes an important strategy to implement effective change in behaviours and acquiring new competencies. This report was written using a descriptive and analytical methodology, a literature review and developing a reflective portfolio. Supporting this journey was a critical appraisal during and about clinical practice. By the end, I believe I developed in a sustained way, acquiring the required specific competencies necessaries for the award of Specialist Nurse
