Abstract

For the specialized Medical-Surgical Nursing practice, it is essential to develop competencies with a purpose of providing safe and quality care to the person in a critical situation. Through the preparation of this report, using a descriptive and reflective methodology of the activities developed, I intend to show the acquisition of these competencies obtained throughout the Curricular Unit Final Internship and Report of the 15th Master's Course in Nursing, with specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the nursing area to the person in a critical situation. The internship took place in two different contexts, first in an Emergency Service followed by an Intensive Care Unit. Contexts that allow the development of skills and capabilities for the acquisition of common competencies of the Specialist Nurse and specific competencies regarding a Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing. The prior establishment of objectives, based on these competencies, served as a guiding thread both in the course of the internship and in the realization of this report. The development comprises three chapters, the first describes the contribution of the internship that took place in the first year of the course, carried out in the context of cardiac intensive care. In the second chapter, the internship fields are contextualized, while in the third, and last, chapter a description, critical and reflective analysis of the activities developed is made, in an attempt to pursue the previously defined objectives and the acquisition of specialized competencies. During this competencies development journey, literature reviews were conducted in each internship context. Their objective was to search for the best evidence based nursing care in: preventing complications associated with peripheral vein administration of amiodarone, namely phlebitis; preventing pressure ulcers associated with non-invasive mechanical ventilation; and communicating bad news to the patient and family/caregiver. The development of these works enable the identification of opportunities for improvement in clinical practice, ensuring evidence-based, high-quality nursing care, The experiences of the internship complemented with a critical reflection on the activities developed, based on scientific evidence, allowed my personal and professional development. While also contributing significantly, as a future specialist nurse, to the way I will provide quality care.
