Abstract

The way we appreciate music and sound is constantly evolving. Investigation and technological advancements in sound diffusion's field and spatialization have led users to an experience beyond the traditional stereo sound. Contemporary concepts, such as immersive audio and 3D sound, are being strengthened in an increasingly common context. The first event of what we can consider a pioneering multi-channel playback was Walt Disney's film Fantasia (1939), which featured a sound playback system known as Fantasound. Other systems have followed, with the most impactful ones being Cinerama (1952) and CinemaScope (1953). Since then, numerous other systems have emerged, exploring different ways of manipulating sound playback in space. From Dolby Stereo to Binaural audio, from Ambisonics to Dolby Atmos, the pursuit of increasingly precise and immersive systems has been a highly relevant and significant theme in the evolution of sound technology. Over the past decades, we have witnessed significant technological advancements that approach techniques and methodologies used for audio spatialization, as well as the development of new tools (plugins) and frameworks (software) that enable sound designers to create 3D audio narratives. Therefore, this formulated report, made within the scope of my Sound Design specialization to obtain a Master's degree, serves as a solid theoretical foundation for my final project named CyberProject. This project aims to create a narrative with immersive and three-dimensional sound characteristics, incorporating advanced techniques, methodologies, and tools used to develop sound and music for video games and cinema.
