Abstract
This master’s thesis studies the life and work of Sebastião Soares de Resende(1906-1967), the first bishop of Beira in Mozambique and the portuguese prelate with the most interventions in the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. From his origins to his illness and death in Beira, we trace his formative, vocational, and pastoral journey.
In the context of the relationship between the Catholic Church and Estado Novo,
particularly in the overseas territories, bishop Sebastião's pastoral action was notable for the missionary strategy and apostolate undertaken in his diocese. Despite political resistance, he tried to denounce the pressing social drama in the portuguese overseas territories. To do so, he used the pastoral letters he sent almost annually to his diocesans and the Diário de Moçambique, a diocesan newspaper created by the prelate where he also published a series of chronicles about his impressions of the Council, looking for the best way to put it into practice in his diocese. This work studies the life of a man, a missionary bishop, a conciliar priest, and an active pastor.
