This report represents the outcome of an intense path, to achieve the required expertise of a specialist nurse in medical-‐surgical nursing. It is a component of the curricular area of the Masters with specialization in Medical-‐Surgical Nursing of Universidade Católica, including acquisition of knowledge and concepts through classes, as well as hands-‐on practical implementation and development of these concepts. It reflects the path taken, the objectives are justified, the activities developed are described, and a critical discussion of the learning process is presented. The title “From thoughtful communication and safe care to care excellence” reflects the transversal backbone supported by the training periods : the communication and the safe care, specially the concerns with isolation, grounded on critical thinking regarding and framed within nursing excellence. To describe the modules undertaken (Modules I and III), we used a descriptive approach, critically evaluating the activities developed along the delineated development project. Communication was addressed in its various components, including interpersonal interaction, and care level, with benefits for the patients, for the professionals involved and for the institution. The activities promoting safe care included communication, training, house rules, amongst others. All these activities led to Health gains, increasing the quality of the service provided. It was demonstrated that the proposed objectives were accomplished with the required quality, and that the skills of a nurse specialized in Medical-‐Surgical Nursing were achieved.
