Abstract

Education of the deaf experienced a great evolution throughout time. Since the 18th century, a period of remarkable evolution in formal Education of deaf people, to this das, the emphasis was set over communication, a vital process for the human being. Over the last thirty years booth in Portugal and in the civilized world, a loop between oralist and bilingual (manualism) approaches took place, a process we will discuss in this document. Bilingual approach is, nowadays, accepted by most of the specialists in deaf education, psychology, and neurology and by deaf themselves and is supported in respect for diversity and the right to school for all. This approach is founded on the assumption that deafness can be considered as a difference and that deaf communities have a language and culture of their own. The goal of this study is to make an overview of education of deaf children over the last thirty years, anchored in philosophical currents, social concepts, curriculum theories and the way how special educational needs are viewed and learning concepts that set the framework of the last three decades from the 80's to nowadays. Another goal is to understand the evolution of deaf Education in Braga and also the degrees of satisfaction of deaf students, their self-esteem, their vision on school and on the professionals that work with them and about bilingual approach that is implemented in School EB 2,3 de Lamaçães, Braga, through the application of a survey. Findings point out to great deaf students’ satisfaction with bilingual model.
