Abstract

Today, more than ever, the nurse’s academic and professional route plays a predominant role in the health institutions, once that the acquisition process of competences is reflected in the quality of cares. There for, the specialized nurse in the pediatric care, due to their broad and extended knowledge about the children’s transition process during the vital cycle, as well as about the real or potential health problems, can be seen as an expert element in the conception and management of the cares provided to the child/family, contributing to its excellence. The present report urges under the Master’s degree in Nursing with specialization in Pediatrics and Child health Nursing, and it pretends to present the experiences and activities developed during the internship course, as well as to reflect about the competence development process, showing the commitment and dedication invested. The internship was divided in three modules: Module I – Child health; Module II – Medicine and Pediatric Surgery and Module III – Pediatric Urgency and Neonatology. Its main objectives were the acquisition of knowledge and its application in specialized contexts, towards solving problems in a new and unfamiliar situations, as well as its integration in order to deal with complex issues and developing solutions and been able to communicate the findings dearly and unambiguously. For such it was necessary to enumerate some objectives that favored and guided my learning. In this process of developing skills for advanced nursing assistance to child/family I had in mind four areas: provision of care, care management, training and research, all this key areas to develop for a full professional performance. In preparing this report I used a descriptive and reflective methodology, using bibliographic search to substantiate the ideas with scientific evidence, making a theoretical framework about the different problematics. I valorized, in multiple domains, the point of parenting as a central thematic and cross cutting across my path, since I consider it to be a central theme of child health nursing practice and Pediatrics. In a more concrete form I think I have reached the proposed objectives and skills, due to a knowing act responsible and assertive, sustained in a constant critical reflection. In this way, and always driven by a demand for excellence provision of care, based on scientific basis, I pretend to be able to respond to all e emerging challenges that are made continuously to nurses who care for children/family.
