Abstract

The paper aims to undertake a theological-pastoral approach to the Augustinian notion of eschatology, starting from his theology of the historia salutis in his opera magna – the De Civitate Dei. The work focuses on books XIX-XXII, where we try to capture lines of force of Augustinian eschatology in two vectors: De finibus civitatis and De visio Dei. Guided by these two vectors, we look at humanity’s condition, destiny, or finality as pilgrims in the heavenly city. In this peregrinatio, humans experience the limits of mortal life which begins, but does not end with death. This believing hope also includes the judgment that requires purification, between death and the Last Judgment. in the Lord´s parousia, which will occur after the final resurrection. Until then, only love (Dei or sui), faith and Christian hope can guide us, under the care and protection of divine providence.
