Abstract

In a context created by insecurity in the face of the restructuring of the Portuguese banking sector, banking institutions have been forced to adjust their objectives to a different vision than in the past, associated with a climate of adaptation on the part of employees. In order to adapt to change, motivation in the workplace is essential, as a motivated employee can be more productive, efficient and effective. However, Decent Work (DW) is an indispensable variable for understanding motivation from another angle. Thus, the general objective of the study is to analyze the dimensions of WL, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO), and whether they contribute to the motivation of employees in the banking sector. In addition, it was decided to understand
which of the DW factors has the greatest impact on employee motivation, to evaluate the influence of DW on employee motivation, and to assess whether sociodemographic and professional characteristics influence motivation and the dimensions of DW. For the empirical part, a quantitative methodology was adopted using a holistic, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The data was collected using a questionnaire adapted from Ferraro et al. (2018) and Rego and Carvalho (2002), and was carried out using the SPSS tool. The sample consisted of 317 employees from the banking sector. The results show that when there is a good working environment, employees feel more motivated. With regard to the DW Dimensions, it can be seen that fulfilling and productive work and health and safety are the ones that contribute most to motivation.
