This This report comes within the scope of the Curricular Unit “Final Internship and Report” resulting from the 15th Master's Degree in Nursing with specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing in the area of Critical Care Patients of the Institute of Health Sciences (Porto) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Through a descriptive and reflective methodology, it addresses the process of acquiring common and specific skills in the assistance to critically ill patient in the internship contexts of the Emergency Service and Extra-Hospital Emergency, also making a brief reference to the 1st year internship in a Multipurpose Intensive Care Unit. A reflection was carried out on the importance of safety and quality in nursing care, as a central theme, emphasizing the importance of implementing policies and strategies that reduce incidents during the provision of care, as well as the importance of nurses ‘compliance of the rules and the search for the best and most current scientific evidence. In the internship of the 1st year of the course, it was possible to develop a work related to the approach to the family of the person in a critical condition, with the objective of satisfying their needs and also facilitating the behavior of the nursing professionals. In the context of Emergency Service and Extra-Hospital Emergency, based on the areas of common competences of the Specialist Nurse, in the field of ethical and legal professional practice, the capacity to carry out practices was developed based on legal norms, on the principles ethics and professional deontology respecting human rights. In the field of continuous quality improvement, work was carried out on the secondary transport of critically ill patients and on the contributions of clinical supervision in nursing, which aimed to collaborate in continuous improvement programs and to develop safe and quality practices. As for the domain of care management, emphasis is given to the ability to manage care and resources by optimizing the team's response and, finally, in the area of learning development, the development of self-knowledge and assertiveness. The literature searches carried out, the reflections and activities developed, the care provided and the experiences lived contributed to professional and personal growth, promoting critical-reflective thinking as a Master and Specialist Nurse. This entire path has implications for professional practice, as it has allowed the development of knowledge and skills based on research, contributing to problem solving and quality management in health.
