This document is the report of the entire journey made in the scope of the Master’s Course in Nursing with Medical-Surgical Specialization with the purpose to give knowledge of the objectives and activities developed in order to acquire the competences of the master’s degree. The patient safety in the several areas of care, was my main focus of attention and served as a background in the course of all activities developed during the realization of the two internship modules, which took place in the emergency service and in the commission of infection control. Throughout the report was used a descriptive methodology and a critical- reflective analysis of the objectives, developed activities and competences acquired, face the difficulties encountered, the strategies developed and the suggested solutions. From the research done, the patient safety was associated with one of the serious problems of Public Health worldwide, with high human and financial costs. The existence of a safety culture is one of the main predictors of the patient safety and requires the training of professionals, a non-punitive culture of error response, an increase of the number of reports of adverse events and a leadership capable of inducing behaviour changes within the teams for a safe care. Of all this work we must enhance the analysis of the activities developed to address problem situations detected in the context of skills acquisitions in the management area, of the professional learning and in the continuous improvement of the care quality. Of the activities developed in the emergency service is highlighted the elaboration of an informative poster, of a document designated “proposal for improvement” delivered to the head of service and a training in service about the patient safety. In the commission of infection control, we highlight the elaboration of an informative poster and an action to raise the awareness of the professionals in preventing the respiratory infection, the verification of the practises related to nebulisations, with the application of a verification grid built and adapted, and the update of the norm related to the hospital nebulisations. 51% of the population studied, we were able to verify a breach of the institutional norm regarding the nebulisations practise, being pointed as major reasons the ignorance of the norm, the lack of structural and human resources and the absence of information about the type of material used. From the results of the bibliographic research we were able to support the suggestion of changes to the established norm concerning the device switch time every 24 hours, cleaning the device at each use, the use of medication single doses, the strengthening of infection control measures such as disinfection of hands and wearing gloves, and material storage measures. The activities and reflections carried out during this period contributed to my personal growth and were in line with the acquisition of master's degree competences. Therefore, opened paths to the discussion of patient safety, sensitized the professionals to the acquisition of behaviours which aim to comply with care safety standards and broke some of the rooted behavioural barriers. In my professional activity, this journey, promoted the implementation of a multidisciplinary project which aims to increase the patient safety in the place where I perform my work at this moment. Learning is a lifelong continuum, so, as a Master in Nursing, I will always guide my actions as a professional, by the scientific evidence, by the safety and quality of the nursing care.
