Over the years, research has been dedicated more to the development of studies and paradigms of an ecological nature, with a view to deepening knowledge of human behavior in naturalistic environments. The study of empathy, due to its complexity, has made a great contribution to the adoption of this type of methodology. In this sense, this study presents a quasi-experimental design, of an ecological nature, and aims to develop a multimodal instrument of empathic vignettes in text and video, assuming a central importance for research and training related to empathic skills, namely in the field of psychology and other areas of care provision. For this study, several samples were used depending on the study phase, including six users of a psychological clinic, 12 focus group participants, four therapists who participated in the validation process and five actors who represented the scripts. The final instrument consists of 25 vignettes, which involve various emotional experiences, both positive and negative. The suggested approach offers significant advantages over traditional methods, particularly in the assessment of empathy, as it is a more holistic approach to empathic responses. In conclusion, this study contributes a robust and versatile tool for assessing and training empathy, with potential application in several scientific areas, particularly in Psychology. Future studies should evaluate the impact of these variables; compare the effectiveness of vignettes in relation to self-report instruments; use approaches that integrate physiological measures to evaluate vignettes with higher emotional responses; and evaluate the effectiveness of training that uses this instrument in terms of empathic skills, with different populations.
