The main objective of the dissertation project was the development of a model for the inventory management of Prescription-only medicines (POM) with application in any portuguese community pharmacy. The model was based on the case study of the pharmacy Aliança, a typical community pharmacy, taking into account the weight of the average annual billing of POM in the total sales and the weight of the inventory cost in the cost structure of the pharmacy. The model was developed in Microsoft Excel, using the simulation-optimization method, based on data collected from the management software used by the Alliance pharmacy, Sifarma 2000, related to the drug stock movements in the years 2015 and 2016. It is divided into two submodels based on these two years. The 2015 model aimed to define the optimal stock levels of POM, while the 2016 model tests the application of these stock levels and compares the results with reality. The POM were segmented into five groups according to criteria relative to the parameters of the model: direct purchase, generic, prorated, ethical and critical; And through an ABC analysis. Three versions of the model were developed, all of which presented better results for the performance indicators used, when compared with reality. These results have demonstrated that the model has practical application and that, if adopted, could improve the economic-financial performance of a community pharmacy.
