This study is part of the “Expanding Mental Health Literacy” project, and it aimed to develop a preliminary version of the items of a new questionnaire to assess mental health literacy in formal caregivers of elderly people, considering the mental health needs of these workers. The study followed three phases: 1) literature review, 2) item generation and 3) think aloud procedure. The literature review identified the mental health problems most associated with the provision of formal care to older people, the main dimensions of the adult mental health literacy construct, as well as examples of items to assess this construct. The generation of items followed the conceptual matrix drawn between the dimensions of the LSM and the main mental health problems associated with the provision of formal care to elderly people, using brainstorming meetings and expert review. The last phase consisted of a think aloud procedure with five formal caregivers of elderly people, which allowed to assess item comprehension, resulting in the reformulation of some items and the development of new items. The main result of this study was the development of 113 items that will integrate the LSMq CFI– caregiver section.
