Desenvolvimento positivo na adolescência e bem-estar subjetivo

Abstract

This study aims to contribute to the spread of the innovative perspective, Positive Youth Development (PYD), in Portugal, as well as exploring the relation between the PYD and the related variable, Subjective Wellbeing (SWB). The PYD approach has been popularized and wins (captures) more and more the interest of researchers and professionals working with adolescents. This is a promotional approach, alternative to traditional models of adolescence that directed their focus on risk and problematic trajectories through much of the 20th century. To accomplish the goals of this work were used the following instruments: Positive Youth Development questionnaire, short measure (Richard Lerner, von Eye, Jaqueline Lerner, Lewin-Bizan, & Bowers, 2010), The Personal Wellbeing Índex - School Children (PWI-SC) (Cummins & Lau, 2005) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The sample consisted of 385 students with an average of 13.37 years (SD=0.957), 48.3% male and 51.7% female. Quantitative results show that 5 C’s, integrative PYD dimensions, relates to PWI – SC domains measure of SWB. The higher correlations were found between the C Connection and the level of satisfaction with the Global Life domain and with particular domains of life Achieving in Life, Relationships and Safety, of PWI - SC questionnaire. Also to be noticed that the results of this study suggest good levels of PYD and SWB on adolescence. With regard to gender differences, girls had higher levels of PYD and boys had higher levels of SWB. Thus, the aim was to contribute to a better understanding of the adolescence period by exploiting an alternative and clarifying vocabulary, able to give it new meanings.
