The textile and clothing industry has a vital role in the world’s economy, being one of the most important industries in Portugal. However, over the last decades, it has been considered one of the most resource-intensive and environment polluting industries. Due to the fast fashion phenomenon, clothing production is increasing while its consumption is decreasing, resulting in increased textile wastage. Thus, the transition towards the circular economy (CE) and more sustainable consumption patterns is becoming a priority for the European Union. Thus, this thesis proposes the development of a framework to design, implement, and scale clothing Second-Hand Business Models. For this aim, based on an exploratory case study of Sonae MC and its [RE]Style project: an adult clothing and accessories Second-Hand Business Model, this dissertation develops the 13 blocks of the Green Business Model Canvas framework to successfully design, implement, and scale the baby and children’s clothing Second-Hand Business Model. It concludes that the segment is desirable, viable, and feasible, covering not only economic, but also social and environmental topics. This dissertation study has corporate and literature contributions since it provides a structured framework for companies and explores the benefits and mechanisms for implementing Second-Hand Business Models in the under-researched Portuguese context.
