Abstract

The last decades have seen the world demographics transform at a very fast pace, with cities increasing in size, becoming fast growing metropolitan areas. In order to increase competitive differentiation between cities, policy makers are exploring their physical and social infrastructure potential, using Information and Communications Technology and Intelligence to support their sustainable development, creating Smart Cities. Data analytics, which applies knowledge in statistics and other scientific and social areas, plays a major role on supporting and developing Smart Cities. Following this movement, Porto’s City Council is currently developing a Business Intelligence & Analytics tool, Leme, in the form of a Dashboard focused on the current economic situation of Porto Municipality. In the present study, we intend to perform a literature review on the design principles for urban dashboards and a benchmark analysis with the exemplary Dublin Municipal publicly accessible dashboard. Our aim is to demonstrate that it is possible for Porto City Council to develop such a project, also extracting some guidance for future developments. With our analysis to the current version of the created platform, we will find that the chosen software and the public data available constitute a good basis for a project of this nature. However, we also conclude that the platform is not yet ready, and can be further improved, specially through the individualization and customization of each variable. We conclude that this step is fundamental to eliminate present maladjustments that are decreasing the platform quality. In conclusion this project has the potential to be shared publicly through a web page application, becoming the core reference for further developments, increasing proximity to citizens, and improving public service.
