Abstract
This study, integrated into the project "Economic hardship, parenting styles and child behaviour problems", aimed to investigate the association between fathers' financial anxiety and parenting styles (authoritarian, democratic, and permissive), and the externalizing behaviours of children and adolescents. A sample of 75 individuals aged between 30 and 63 years participated by completing a questionnaire, which included the following instruments: sociodemographic questionnaire, Financial Anxiety Scale (FAS), Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ), and Childhood Behavior Checklist (CBCL 6-18). Data analyses were conducted using the IBM SPSS statistical software (version 28). We found statistically significant positive correlations between fathers’ financial anxiety and children’s externalizing behaviours, as well as between the less adaptive parenting styles (authoritarian and permissive) and externalizing behaviours. Conversely, the democratic parenting style showed a significant negative association with externalizing behaviours. Additionally, a simple mediation model indicated that the authoritarian parenting style mediates the relation between fathers’ financial anxiety and children's externalizing behaviours.| Date of Award | 10 Jul 2024 |
