Abstract

The present study is part of a larger project entitled Economic hardship, parenting role and child behavior problems held at the Research Centre for Human Development. The aim of the study is to analyse the role of psychological symptoms in the relation between parents’ economic hardship and externalizing behavior problems in children aged 10 to 18 years. An online questionnaire including the Financial Anxiety Scale, the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Children Behaviour Checklist was administered to 335 parents from different regions in Portugal. Data analysis was conducted using the IBM SPSS Statistics-27 software package. Associations were tested between objective and subjective economic hardship measures, anxiety and depression scales, and an externalization measure. Results showed significant positive correlations between subjective economic hardship, psychological symptoms, and externalization. By resorting to both simple and parallel mediation models, a complete mediation effect was observed through depression in the relation between parents’ economic hardship and children externalizing behaviors.
