Abstract

The primary focus of this thesis is the analysis of the impact of bank risk variables on depositor behaviour in the Portuguese banking sector, with the objective of answering the following research question: “Can depositors be considered active participants in the market discipline as they react to changes in banks’ risk profiles?” The assessment resulted in a study which investigares the impact of variables commonly referred in the literature and able to capture various dimensions of banking risk – namely capital adequacy, asset quality, management efficiency, profitability and liquidity (CAMEL) – in the variation of both interest rates for banks deposits an the number of deposits made. The methodology applied was the estimation of an Panel Least Squares - PLS multiple linear regression model over the period from 2004 to 2014, using semi-annual panel data in order to analyse the impact of bank risk indicators on the growth and the interest rate of deposits. The results confirmed the presence of depositors’ discipline in Portuguese banks. Depositors discipline riskier banks, by seeking higher premiums and/or withdrawing their deposits. The results are consistent with empirical studies, which show that the guaranteed depositors also react to banks’ financial situation, as they are concerned about their solvency.
